Monitoring Disk Space on Your Hosting Account

Running out of disk space can cause website errors, failed email delivery, and inability to upload new content. Regularly monitoring your usage helps you avoid these problems.

Checking Usage via DirectAdmin

  1. Log in to your DirectAdmin control panel. You can access it from your SillyHost client area by clicking the hosting package and selecting Log in to Control Panel.
  2. On the main dashboard, look for the Disk Usage section which shows your current usage and total allocation.
  3. The bar graph provides a visual indicator — green means you have plenty of space, amber means you are approaching the limit, and red means you are nearly full.

Detailed Breakdown

To see what is consuming your disk space:

  • Website files: Navigate to File Manager and check the size of your public_html directory.
  • Email accounts: Go to E-Mail Accounts to see the storage used by each mailbox. Old emails with large attachments are common culprits.
  • Databases: Check MySQL Management to see the size of each database.
  • Backups: If you store manual backups on the server, these can consume significant space.
  • Log files: Error logs and access logs can grow large over time.

Freeing Up Space

  • Delete old email messages with large attachments from your mailboxes.
  • Remove unused website backups from the server (always keep a copy elsewhere).
  • Optimise images on your website using compression tools.
  • Clear cache files generated by your CMS (WordPress cache plugins, for example).
  • Delete unused databases from old installations.

Need More Space?

If you are consistently running out of disk space, it may be time to upgrade to a larger hosting plan. See our guide on upgrading your hosting plan for details.
