Setting Up Email Forwarders in cPanel
Email forwarders automatically redirect incoming emails from one address to another. This is useful when you want emails sent to a specific address to arrive in a different mailbox without creating a separate email account.
Common Uses for Forwarders
- Forward
sales@yourdomain.co.ukto your personal Gmail account. - Forward
info@yourdomain.co.ukto multiple team members. - Create a catch-all forwarder to capture emails sent to any address at your domain.
- Redirect old email addresses to new ones after staff changes.
Creating a Forwarder
- Log in to cPanel and navigate to the Email section.
- Click on Forwarders.
- Click Add Forwarder.
- In the Address to Forward field, enter the local part of the email (e.g.,
sales). - Select the correct domain from the dropdown.
- Under Destination, select Forward to Email Address and enter the target email address.
- Click Add Forwarder to save.
Forwarder with a Mailbox
You can have both a forwarder and a mailbox for the same address. Create the email account first, then add a forwarder. This way, emails are stored in the mailbox and also forwarded to the other address. This is useful for keeping a local copy while receiving notifications elsewhere.
Catch-All Forwarders
A catch-all forwarder captures any email sent to your domain that does not match an existing account or forwarder. While convenient, use this with caution as it can attract significant spam. To set one up, go to Forwarders > Add Domain Forwarder and specify the destination address.
Important Considerations
- Forwarders can sometimes cause delivery issues with SPF and DKIM if the forwarding server is not properly configured.
- Excessive forwarding to external providers like Gmail may trigger spam filters on the receiving end.
- Review your forwarders periodically to remove any that are no longer needed.
