Pointing Your Domain to SillyHost Servers

If you registered your domain elsewhere but want to host your website with SillyHost, you need to point the domain to our servers. There are two methods to accomplish this.

Method 1: Change Nameservers (Recommended)

This method hands over all DNS management to SillyHost, which is the simplest approach.

  1. Log in to your domain registrar's control panel (wherever you purchased the domain).
  2. Find the Nameserver or DNS settings for your domain.
  3. Replace the existing nameservers with the SillyHost nameservers:
    • ns1.sillyhost.co.uk
    • ns2.sillyhost.co.uk
  4. Save the changes. Propagation may take up to 24 to 48 hours.

Method 2: Update A Record

If you want to keep DNS management with your current provider, you can point the domain using an A record.

  1. Log in to your SillyHost client area and locate your server IP address under your hosting package details.
  2. At your domain registrar, navigate to DNS Management.
  3. Create or edit the A record for @ (root domain) and set the value to your SillyHost server IP.
  4. Add another A record for www pointing to the same IP address.

Verifying the Setup

After making changes, you can verify your domain is pointing correctly:

  • Use an online tool such as whatsmydns.net to check DNS propagation globally.
  • Open a terminal and run nslookup yourdomain.com to confirm the IP address matches your SillyHost server.

Troubleshooting

If your domain is not resolving after 48 hours, double-check that the nameservers or A records are correct and that there are no typos. If problems persist, contact our support team.
