Connecting via FTP with FileZilla

FileZilla is a free, open-source FTP client that makes it easy to upload and manage files on your SillyHost account. This guide walks you through setting up a connection.

Step 1: Download FileZilla

Download FileZilla Client from filezilla-project.org. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it using the default settings.

Step 2: Find Your FTP Credentials

Your FTP credentials can be found in your SillyHost client area:

  • FTP Host – Your domain name or the server hostname, for example ftp.yourdomain.co.uk.
  • FTP Username – Your cPanel username or FTP account username.
  • FTP Password – The password you set for the FTP account.
  • FTP Port – Use port 21 for standard FTP.

Step 3: Connect in FileZilla

  1. Open FileZilla and locate the Quickconnect bar at the top of the window.
  2. Enter your Host, Username, Password, and Port in the respective fields.
  3. Click Quickconnect.
  4. If prompted about an unknown certificate, review the details and click OK to accept.

Step 4: Navigate and Transfer Files

Once connected, you will see your local files on the left panel and your server files on the right panel. Navigate to the public_html directory on the server side to find your website files. Drag and drop files between panels to upload or download.

Saving Your Connection

To avoid entering credentials every time, use the Site Manager in FileZilla. Go to File > Site Manager > New Site, enter your details, and click Connect. Your connection will be saved for future use.

Recommended Settings

For the best experience, set the transfer mode to Binary under Transfer > Transfer Type. This prevents file corruption when uploading scripts, images, and other non-text files. Also limit simultaneous connections to 3 to avoid server throttling.
